Running in the Storm Ch. 1

Chapter 1:

“Good mornin’ Daddy.” Greeted Kayla.

“Good mornin’ Kaycake.” Replied Daddy.

“Do you have to work t’day?” pondered Kayla.

“Yeah Kay. I’m gonna take off in about a hour n’ a half. I’ll drop you at Lilac’s.”

“YES! I’ll get to see Cupcake!!!!!!”

Cupcake was Kayla’s 5 year old Paint, that she’d had since she was 3. She loved to go to Lilac’s (Lilac was her Aunt on her Father’s side) to ride Cupcake. Kayla described riding Cupcake as like riding in a sailboat on a calm, calm ocean. Kayla was very talented at riding and had won many competitions, leaving her “trophy shelf” PACKED! Cupcake was a light brown with white and black spots. He had a main and tail with many colors; brown, black, blonde, red, and light brown. Cupcake was spunky but would always obey Kayla. Cupcake looked up at Kayla like Kayla looked up to God. Her Daddy had raised her to be a very strong Christian with a love of God that couldn’t be broken. He had taught Kayla good manners, how to ride horses, how to do math, how to read, how to ride a bicycle, and on and on and on, but he believed that Kayla could throw away all of those extras and could still survive with the love of God. Kayla prayed every time she woke up, every breakfast, every lunch, every dinner, and every time she went to bed. She never forgot and never planned on forgetting to pray.

“So you’d rather see your good old horse then see your Papa????” Daddy joked.

“No way Daddy! But I would like to be with C-cakes if I can’t be with you!!!!!!!” Kayla replied.

“That was a good save Kay.”

“Thanks Dadda’.”

“Go ahead and and get ya’ self dressed and ready so we can get movin’. I can’t be late today!”

“Okay Daddy. I’ll be right back.”

Kayla ran down the hallway. She wanted to please her Daddy and be as quick as possible. Then she stuck her head out of the hallway again and said,

“Daddy can we go to IHOP to get some pancakes???”.

“We’ll see how fast you can get ready...” he chuckled.

Then Kayla sprinted to her room pulled the door open and went into her closet. Her Mama always used to pick out Kayla’s outfits. Every time Kayla went into her closet, Kayla got sad just thinking about it. Her Mom had passed away from cancer when Kayla was 5. She can’t really remember her Mama much, but she can remember that she was the nicest person in the world and has the bestest smile ever. A tear trickled down Kayla’s face staining her dirty little cheek, which she was going to wash after she got dressed. Kayla and her Daddy were playing baseball last night in the back yard right before Kayla went to bed, and Kayla loves to slide on those bases and get all dirty. She says she doesn’t care if no other girls like to get dirty, she wasn’t them. Right before she went to bed she never did wash her face… She was way to tried, she just plopped in her bed and feel right to sleep and had sweet dreams about her Mama.

Kayla threw on her riding jeans a old t-shirt that said “Born to Ride” and her pair of pink and brown cowgirl boots. She ran into her bathroom and took a wash-cloth, dampened it, and then soaked her face with water. She looked down at the wash-cloth to see that it had gone from white to a light brown with white spots dappling it.

Kayla ran out and yelled , “READY DADDY!!!!!”

“Whew babycakes!!!!!! I’m standin’ right here no need to yell!” Daddy laughed in his deep, booming laugh.

“Oops. Sorry. Didn’t see ya’ there!!!!!”

“It’s okay baby. Let’s just get goin’.”

They walked out the door and locked it with their bronze key. They unlocked the car and it let out a little tiny “beep”, just like it always does. Kayla closed the black door and buckled her belt.

“All buckled up?????” Daddy asked.

“You betcha!” Kayla replied back.

Her Daddy wouldn’t let her ride in the front seat because he was not such a great driver and he wouldn’t ever want anything to happen to her.

“Daddy?”

“Yes honey???”

“I love you. I love you a lot.”

“Aw honey you’re so sweet. I love you more then you can imagine!”

Kayla smiled her Momma’s smile and then Daddy turned on the radio. Kayla’s favorite song came on and she started singing quietly. Kayla had a beautiful voice but didn’t know it. Her Dad had tried to tell her but she just argued and said that his words weren’t true.

They pulled into IHOP and walked inside quickly.

“Two orders of double stacked pancakes to go please.” Said Daddy.

“What kind of pancakes?” Asked the teenaged girl behind the counter.

Kayla just thought that the girl was gorgeous. She looked at the teenager’s name-tag. Gelli. Wow for such a beautiful girl she sure didn’t have that great of a name… Kayla admired her wavy brown hair touching about an inch below her shoulder and beautiful big hazel eyes. Gelli looked at Kayla and smiled. The sweetest smile ever. (Other than her Mom’s of course.)

“Here you go sweetie.” Said Gelli to Kayla.

“Thank you!” Replied Kayla.

Kayla and her Dad walked out the double doors that turned different colors as people walked in and out. Kayla kept looking back at Gelli as she walked out. GREEN! The doors flashed on her and her Daddy.

“Wow Daddy! Did you see that girl? She was so pretty. I just couldn’t stop lookin’ at her. I wish I could be that pretty when I get older!” Kayla exclaimed.

“Honey, you’ll be even prettier!” Daddy bent down and kissed Kayla’s cheek.

“Daddy stop with the flattery! It’s not even possible to be prettier than her!”

Daddy just smiled. He knew not to reply back because Kayla would just argue with him over and over and over again. They drove about 5 more miles and Kayla sat in the back adoring the beautiful fields with horses in them. Kayla studied each one quickly and NONE of them were as pretty as Cupcake. Then finally RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR they skidded into the drive way. Time to ride Cupcake!!
